Lessons I have learnt being raised by a single Mumma!

Forget comic characters, pop stars, and celebs. My inspiration, the person I’ve always looked up to and admired has always been my mumma. When I think of a real life super hero, she comes to mind.

Here’s what I’ve learnt being raised by the strongest woman I know:

Women can DIY too!

Much to the bullshit stigma that DIY is a mans job. Women can have tool boxes too! My mum could have shares in Ikea, the amount of times she has re-decorated our house over the years. I mean she would swear like she had a case of Tourette’s throughout the furniture building process “fuck, bollocks, wanker” were the norm- but she got that shit done every single time.

Money isn’t the beal & endle!

We didn’t have a lot of money and my mum sure did struggle. But did we miss out? Never. She showed me how to money manage and that money isn’t the root of all happiness and to never let money rule my life.

Without manners you’re nothing!

Manners cost nothing! Something that was drilled into us often.

To not cut my kids own hair!

I mean I am a hairdresser now so I think I have the skills to pass this one, but prior to my qualification this would have been a no no. The cropped bowl haircuts we endured were not cool mum, not cool!!

Honesty is the best policy!

When you are honest, people have more respect for you. The truth always comes out in the end, so you might as well be honest from the get go. Honesty = truth = respect.

Self responsibility

Too admit when you f*ck up and take responsibility for your actions. You can’t pass the buck in life and you have to face yourself even when you don’t want to.

Second chances are ok

My mum taught me people can change and (in some circumstances) people do deserve second chances. We all make mistakes, we’re all human, and we are all capable of changing.

Family is a team

The most important thing we have in life is our family. We are a team and face everything together. We have each others back and pick each other up when the going gets tough.

The 3 count really works

If you’re a mum, you must know this one right? You ask your kid to do something and you start with 1. 2. And you betcha they will come running before you hit that terrifying number 3. I’ll add this to my parenting list when I have bubbas!

The look means business!

My mum used to give us this look, it was like a scary ass don’t fuck with me look. When that look was flared upon us, we knew to rein it in.

Being independent is a beautiful thing!

Providing for yourself, being self-sufficient and self-confident is always so much more rewarding than relying on someone else. You can get there alone, you don’t always need others! If you want something, you can get it!

We don’t need no man!

I don’t need someone else to make me feel loved or validate my existence. I don’t need to have a significant other by my side to enjoy life, I can enjoy it by myself.

My love of Lisa Stansfield music

I remember me, my mum and my sisters used to sit in the kitchen and have singing sessions. We used to blast the CD player and sing to our hearts content. This consisted of Lisa Stansfield often and even now, her songs are my favourite!

Don’t fit in, stand out!

My mum is one quirky mofo and I wouldn’t have her any other way. She taught me to be myself and never try to fit in. Be loved for who you are, not for what the world thinks you should be!

You have a voice to USE.

I’ve always been told to stand up for what I believe in, to use my voice and never back down.

Capture memories

My mum used to video cam everything and let us take control and film ourselves (bad idea when I taped over our family holiday cause I was filming myself singing in my bedroom, soz mum) even to this day we love getting the old camera out and watching back on the good old days. Memories last a life time, capture it all.

You can over come anything

My mums gone through a list of endless shit, sometimes I don’t even know how she is still standing and facing life. She has proven that in life we can over come anything, even the shit of the shit. These things only break us if we allow them too. We can over come any obstacles in our way and fight back stronger than ever.

Love is all we need

If you have love, you have everything.

Never give up on what you really want

If you really want something, don’t give up on it. Even if it isn’t happening yet, doesn’t mean it never will. When you want something badly enough, you will always end up getting it.

My mum really is my best friend

She is my best friend, my rock, my real life super hero. I hope I can grow to be half the woman she is.

Shout out to all the single mumma’s out there – you are all doing a wonderful job!

Published by Life Of Lil

Hello lovely's thanks for stumbling by. If you are a returning reader, thanks for your continuous loving. If you are new here, welcome to the show (and again, thanks for the love) So you are probably on this page to find out the nitty & gritty of me eh? As much as I would love to brag that I am this really cool chick who occasionally fire breathes on the weekends for fun, that would be an awful not even funny lie.  Gosh, introductions- they are kinda awkward huh? No pressure.  My name is Leanne Lilly (more often than not, known and addressed as 'Lil') I am a 25 year old woman on a mission to sprinkle positivity, empowerment, fun and realness onto my fellow human beings.  I have a passion for writing and a love of over sharing with my straight up sally attitude, I embrace my voice & have no fear of sharing it. I guess I have just always had a thing for giving my opinion & expressing my advice. I am an over sensitive, big-hearted, cry baby who is majorly compassionate, understanding and giving, but who also has daily breakdowns, mood swings, & take's no shit. But I will always speak my truth. I suppose there is many aspects to this personality.  With that said it will be no suprise that this is a Mish-Mash Life Style Blog. A Blog that is home to everything and everything. You wouldn't find me in a specific genre, because I do not think you could tie my life down (let alone my personality) to one genre. This is just a Diary if you like of a truth-speaking, real talking girl. It follows my life, my feelings, my funny side (yes, I find myself funny) and all the shit that goes down in-between. And you will probably find a bit of TMI. Often. Sorry in advance.  Disclaimer: I am NOT a grammar goddess, so don't get all grammar police on my ass. (Pretty please) P.s... When I was 7 Year's old, I asked my mum what she thought I would be when I was older "A writer or something to do with writing" - I was FUMING. I wanted to be a pop star. Years on, here I am passionately writing away & loving it. Moral of the story: Mum's are always right.
